SYB Freebie: 5 Origins A Perfect World BB Creams

Hola mis amigas! First off, shout out to Denene@MyBrownBaby for winning last week’s SYB Freebie, the Kiehls Aromatic Blends Orange Blossom Collection! I asked you to describe the first fragrance you fell in love with, and her response — about her dearly departed mom’s Fashion Fair lotion — moved all of us to tears. Gorgeous writing, Ms. Denene.

Enter to win FIVE of these babies.

And now, for this week’s SYB Freebie. I’m giving away FIVE of my favorite BB Cream on the planet, Origins A Perfect World SPF 15 BB Cream! This is huge. I’ve tried them all and to me, Origins has the prettiest finish and the best selection of shades for brown women (Smashbox rules too, but sweet baby Jesus, they’re forever sold out). And the ethereal glow, lightweight coverage and all-day moisture it provides is just…well, it’s utterly transforming. To be one of the five winners, hit the comments section and ask me your most pressing beauty question. Oh, and only girls who “like” my FB page are eligible! The SYB Babes with the most interesting/timely/universal questions win :)

And speaking of Origins, here’s a fun little video of me hosting the “green carpet” for their annual Origins Rocks Earth Month Concert featuring Gavin DeGraw. I really feel that the orange lip makes the whole moment. Thoughts?

Love ya, mean it!  xoxo, Tia

A Few Things About Concealer…

Hola muchachitas! Okay, so almost every time I post a pic of myself, I get a handful of SYB Babes dying to know my concealer sitch. Since I can take a hint (but not a second more of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta…please boycott, please) I decided it was time to pass on the best concealer tips I’ve picked up from the pro’s over the years! Here you go!

1.) The whole thing about concealer is that you want it to look natural, right? So every step you take should be with this in mind. Look at yourself in the mirror. Does it look like you have two bright, obvs way-lighter-than-your-skin-tone swatches under your eyes? Does it look cakey?  Has it settled into your fine lines? If yes, then it’s time to rethink your technique.

2.) If you wear foundation or tinted moisturizer, apply your concealer AFTER, not before. Sometimes your foundation does half the work for you, so you may not even need so much, just a couple dabs.

3.) Your concealer should be one shade lighter than your skin tone. One shade. Any lighter and you’re just putting a spotlight on whatever you’re trying to conceal.. Yes, the current trend is that Kardashian/Knowlesian uber-brightness under the eyes, but they’re dealing with bright paparazzi lights, or working the red carpet. That’s “concealer as event,” not a natural look that translates for day. Also, stick with yellow undertoned concealers.

Legendary.

4.) Since our skin color changes so much over the year — and, let’s be honest, brown girls have like three different skin tones on their face at one time (usually the forehead and chin are darker) — I’m a fan of concealer palettes, with like three or more shades you can blend together to custom-blend your own hue. My all-time favoritos are Make Up Forever 5 Camouflage No. 4  and Philosophy The Supernatural Color Corrector in Dark (above).

5.) Always apply moisturizer or eye cream before applying concealer. If you put it on a dry face, it’ll just settle into fine lines and make you look mad old.

6.) And now, the most important insider secret of all: Skip the tiny concealer brushes — the bristles just spread it all around, and you end up not covering up what you need to cover up. The same goes for when you swipe it on with your fingers. Instead, dab dab dab it on with the pad of your 2nd finger (the longest one…does it have a name?). Use quick, kinda-firm dabs — this pats it in, ensuring that your concealer goes where it needs to go. And stays.

Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit comes with it's own powder. Makes your life a zillion times easier.

7) After applying, make sure you set your coverup with a light dusting of translucent powder. This helps ensure that it won’t slide all over your face during the day (especially important for oily skin types). Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit comes with it’s own powder, which is super-convenient.

Happy concealing, tenderonis!

Eau de Everything!

I’m moth-to-a-flame attracted to girly stuff right now. As you now know, my life is falling apart around my ears — and for some reason, surrounding myself with hyper-feminine luxury just feels sooo cathartic. Everything around me must smell pretty! In my quest for scent salvation, I’ve stumbled upon three totally unexpected, lusciously fragranced products that I now can’t exist without. Get into them:

Flowerbomb.com

Hair perfume! So necessary, and yet still sort of a rare beauty find — so when I come across a good one, I buy like three, because it’s most likely a limited edition item. Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Bomblicious Hair Mist ($45) is so hot. Before I leave the house — even just to go on a tampon run — I flip my hair upside down and spritz this bergamot-freesia-orange-blossom-blended scent all up and through my strands. And then, for the rest of the day, I’m surrounded by a delicate cloud of yumminess. Also? The scent is super-subtle, so it won’t interfere with your perfume (I wear it instead of fragrance, actually…it’s sexier). You’ll love.

I wanna roll around naked in these.

Gianna Rose Scented Drawer Liners ($20 for 6 sheets) are just so chic. Lining drawers with gorgeously printed, scented papers just feels so breezily decadent, so “let them eat cake.” Honestly, if the sheets were bigger I’d use them as wallpaper. Anyway, the liners come in Vanilla Pear, Lavender and Rosewater — and for me, Vanilla Pear is the one. So summery, so cheerful.

Scented earrings? Yes, please.

Delicate, vintage-y, chicer-than-chic, Lisa Hoffman’s new Fragrance Earrings and Bracelets ($65, each; above and below) are so ingenious. Each piece of jewelry comes with a boho luxe charm filled with tiny scented beads (you get extras so you can refresh the scent whenever you want). So you’re, like, emitting this secret, fabulous scent — and no one knows wear it’s coming from! The beads come in sultry, exotic fragrances like Tunisian Neroli, Madagascar Orchid and French Clary Sage. So midnight-garden-party-in-Marrakesh.

Exotic arm party.

Q&A Thursday: Summer Moisturizers

QUESTION:“Ma’am! I need a lightweight moisturizer for the summer! I have oily/normal skin, and heavy moisturizers break me out — plus, they feel sticky and gross in this hot weather. FYI, grad student budget.” — Carrie1986

ANSWER: I hear you, baby. Few things are grosser than a heavy duty moisturizer perched atop a sweaty face on a 99 degree day. Ewwwie Gwoss (Bobina-ism). But even if your skin is oily to the max, it’s a mistake is to skip moisturizer altogether in the summer. Your skin needs hydration more than ever, especially since you’re sweating it all out. Just go for something a tad lighter — switch from creams to gels — and maybe try one with some shine-blocking properties. For mi dinero, these three are the best ones on the market:

Garnier Nutritioniste Moisture Rescue Lightweight UV-Lotion ($7.99) is so nice on super-sweltering days. This gentle lotion keeps your skin totally hydrated, but it disappears the second you apply it — no residue, no leftover stickiness. Plus, it has UV protection, which is great if you’re going to be out in the sun.

Coola MineralFace Matte Finish Cucumber SPF 30 ($36) is my favorite summer moisturizer, hands down. Green girls will love it because it’s organic and blended with chemical-free sunblock…but I adore it because it goes on matte. So key if you tend to perspire a lot, or if you have an oily T-zone. Oh yeah, it also doubles as a fine-line-diffusing primer! A++.

Benefit Triple Performing Facial Emulsion SPF 15 ($28) is completely oil-free and awesome for acne-prone skin. Spiked with Benefit’s fancy tri-radiance complex (to help the skin retain water), this sheer moisturizer protects, soothes, and softens summertime skin without clogging pores. And the vintage-y bottle will look so sweet on your vanity.

My Mani is Everythang

Crazy. Three months ago I was a proud nail art virgin (#eww #tacky #hood), now I’m Minx’ing like a motha. Do you love my new mani? I got it at Polish Bar of Brooklyn…it’s Minx’s new “Barcode Maze” strips. When I first saw the decals in the packaging, I thought it was a Kinte cloth print, hahahaaa. But for real, it kinda looks like that, right? Whatever the hell design it is, it’s cute — and nothing says “cool girl” this summer like a loud, gauche-in-a-fun-way, super-creative mani.

Exhibit A: Supermodel Jeneil Williams backstage at Jen Kao. See what I mean? Cool girl.

Obvi, everyone’s broke so the salon option might not always be realistic. Nail brands know this, and a slew of sexy little DIY nail art kits are cropping up, like, everywhere. Voila, my favorite drugstore and high-end moments for your pleasure, darling:

Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips ($5 each) are adorable, guys. They come in every print imaginable — leopard, tie dye, fishnet, floral-ness — and they can last up to 10 days if you’re not working on an oil rig or something. You just slap the little sticker on your nail bed and then peel ‘em off when you’re over it. Fun!

I think this one is my favorite, being a writer and all. The New Black ‘Typography Collection – Weekly Journal’ Nail Polish Set ($16) comes with a nude nail polish, glossy topcoat, transfer solution and 10 printed newspaper sheets. Here’s how it works: you paint nails with two coats of nude polish, then cut a piece of the newspaper print close to the shape/size of your nail. Brush on the transfer solution, and while it’s wet, press the print facedown. Apply the transfer solution again and hold firmly for 30 seconds. Finish with a topcoat and voila! A gorgeous, type-set nail. I’m sooo into this look.

Fierce nails for everyone! Have a flawless weekend, muchachitas. Love ya, mean it.

SYB Freebie: Kiehls’ Aromatic Blends Orange Blossom Collection

I’ve been a woman without a fragrance for a couple months now, which is a place I’m unused to. My scent forever was Stella by Stella McCartney, but earlier this spring I got super-dramatic about a deva breakup (surprise!) and decided the scent was too unutterably painful for me to continue wearing. The scent — with all it’s luscious memories of a love for the ages, people, FOR THE AGES — was causing me to dissolve into tears at inappropriate moments (hello, parent/teacher conference) and take to my bed, too overwrought to even find pleasure in the Housewives franchise. No, I was only interested in watching ‘The Way We Were.” Or the “La Douleur Exquise” episode of Sex & the City. With a vintage handkerchief in my ill-manicured clutches, to dab my leaky nose (which was too raw and sensitive even for those tissues with the lotion in them).

Superb, now I’m in tears. Did I forget to take my Zoloft this morning? Fuuuck. Wait, what were we talking about again?

Ah yes! The mad beauty editor’s fragrance journey. So yeah, after my mini-meltdown, I began wearing Gucci Gardenia, which was ultra-lovely, but ultimately a rebound perfume. It just reminded me that I was supposed to be getting over something (not cool…when I’m sad I must wallow). So, when I visited the Kiehls’ offices last week for the launch of their Aromatic Essences line, I was fully fragrance-free. Which changed the second I inhaled their dreeaamy new scent collection.

Each of the four scents — including Orange Flower & Lychee, Vanilla & Cedarwood, Nashi Blossom & Pink Grapefruit, and Fig Leaf & Sage ($55, each) –was more lushly sensual and earthy-sultry then the last. How could they not be, with ingredients sourced from a Moroccan desert oasis, an Ugandan jungle, tranquil Japanese gardens and Provence’s epically romantic countryside? Plus, each lightweight scent has a corresponding Skin-Softening Body Lotion (new formula, inspired by the bestselling Creme de Corps) and Skin-Softening Body Wash. I do enjoy a fragrance you can layer.

My favorite was Orange Blossom & Lychee, a crisp, utterly feminine, totally summer-perfect scent that I’ve worn every day since. Yes! I’ve found a new signature fragrance! Because I’m so enamored, I’m giving away one Orange Blossom collection ($105 value) to one lucky SYB Babe! To enter, hit the comments section and reveal the first perfume you fell in love with. My fave story wins!

Kiehls Aromantic Blends will be available in July.
